Vale Graeme Clements

The THRA Committee notes with sadness the passing on 17 October of Graham Clements, a member since 1955. A teacher by profession, Graham taught in a number of schools, was principal of Taroona High School 1975-1989 and was a District Superintendent in the Education Department. A great enthusiast for Tasmanian history, he had a long association with the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society, including serving as President. We offer our condolences to Graham’s family.

New Members

The THRA Committee would like to welcome the following new members:

  • Cathy Alexander, Sandy Bay
  • Linda Clarke, Lanena
  • Peter Enlund, Burwood East, Victoria
  • Freya Harrington, Kingston, ACT
  • Katrina Schlunke, Battery Point
  • Jan Tierney, South Hobart
  • Kate Sharman, Mt Hicks (winner of the 2020 MD McRae Memorial Prize) John Shepherd, Riverside

Excusions in 2021

The THRA Committee is busily following up on a number of excursions for 2021. One that will be held is an all-day excursion to the Waddamana hydro-electric power station on Saturday, 13 March. This excursion will be spearheaded by Chris Tassell. A trip to Chauncy Vale with Anne Thwaites and Ken Wright is also planned for 17 April. Anne McConnell will be taking an excursion to kunanyi/Mt Wellington on 16 May. We will have more details about the excursions in the New Year. Please note that the talks by Chris and Anne noted above will set the scene for their excursions, an innovation we hope will benefit members.

Australian Jewish Newspapers Online

A fruitful collaboration between the National Library of Australia, the National Library of Israel and the Australian Jewish Historical Society has resulted in 180 years of Australian Jewish newspapers or 200,000 pages being made freely available and searchable on the Trove newspaper website at https://trove.nla.gov.au

Thanks to THRA Members

The THRA Committee would like to thank members for their support in 2020 and wish you all a safe and healthy Festive Season. We look forward to sharing our love of Tasmanian history with you all in 2021.
