The University of Tasmania Cultural Collections contain more than 100,000 objects, most of which don’t ever go onto public display. The University has been the custodian for these records and objects for more than 130 years, and you are invited to come and see some special items from Tasmania’s history.

On Wednesday 2 July at 10am, members of THRA are invited to view selected objects from the Waterworth Optical Collection (located in the John Elliott Classics Museum) and Special and Rare Collections.

The Waterworth Optical Collection is rarely displayed and contains objects from a Tasmanian enterprise that manufactured lenses and other optical artefacts during World War Two. The Special and Rare Collections of books and other documentary sources covers Tasmania’s history from early colonisation to the modern day. If time allows, you may also be able to tour the John Elliott Classics Museum.

This tour will be on the Sandy Bay Campus of UTAS, at the Morris Miller Library and John Elliot Classics Museum. There is lift access to the Special and Rare Collections, and service lift access to the Classics Museum for visitors unable to use a small set of stairs.

Meet at 10am on 2 July in the ground floor foyer of the Morris Miller Library. Please be punctual as we will split you into two groups and move away from the meeting point promptly.

Numbers are limited and this is a free members-only excursion.

To book, please email Imogen Wegman on Imogen.Wegman@utas.edu.au
