After training as a Chartered Accountant, Rupert migrated to Australia in 1975 as the last of the £10 Poms. A varied career took him from accountancy practice in NSW, through owning a hospitality business then work as Financial Controller in the remote Aboriginal Community of Maningrida in the Northern Territory. After retiring to Tasmania in 2006 he has served as Treasurer for several community organisations including the Hobart Walking Club, the Understorey Network and the Westwinds Community Centre.
